Updated, re-imagined and re-engineered for 2024/5, the brand new Spatz 'SHIELD2' winter jacket is unlike anything available on the market today. The new version is sleeker, better fitting and more breathable than before, whilst retaining the legendary warmth, water-proofing and comfort of the original 'SHIELD' jacket.

The design brief for the Spatz 'SHIELD2' winter jacket was very simple: Design and produce the only cycling jacket you will need to train/ride through a harsh winter, regardless of the conditions.

We are very proud to say that this product is designed, tested and manufactured in the North of England and is made of 100% recycled fabrics too. Water repellent coatings are plant based and PFC free and the packaging is fully compostable.

The cut of the Spatz 'SHIELD2' winter jacket is close and aero whilst allowing room for Spatz base layer(s) to nestle comfortably below. In true Spatz style, the neck is cut high and the arms are cut close and long. The front of the jacket is trimmed short for comfort in a cycling position and the brand new rear flap is cut long to protect you from spray.

As lifetime cyclists (and a double Olympic Champion), we spend a lot of time on a bike in the cold. It was important to add such features as; 3x rear pockets and a zippered rear coin/phone pocket. The pockets are cut and positioned to offer easy access on the bike, (especially with gloved hands). Logos are dark grey reflective print for a stealth aesthetic that glows up bright in the traffic.

For 24/25 every panel is updated and improved. For the main body and upper arms, we have specified a brand new 'Windtex Evolution Active Pro' fabric. 'Windtex Evolution Active Pro' simply outperformed all the other fabrics we tested for this application. It is not only waterproof and windproof but also thermal, highly breathable and incredibly comfortable. The fabric offers 4-way stretch and has a brushed fleece lining to trap warm air and encourage moisture to wick away. It partners brilliantly with our legendary Spatz Base Layers.

New for 24/25, the lower arm sections, collar and rear hem are made of a hydrophobic neoprene-like fabric and are laser cut to remove the need for a bulky hem. This means we can cut the openings close and clean to offer a seamless transition from jacket to gloves and tights. Comfort is increased and water ingress is minimised. Sleeves are cut to work in unison with the Spatz Gloves range and the collar and rear hem sit beautifully against the body. Our goal has always been to produce a modular clothing system where each seperate garment integrates together in unison and can be tuned to suit the environment.

The rear panel is PFC free, plant based DWR coated Roubaix fabric to allow articulation, warmth and breathability. Again, this fabric has a brushed fleece internal face and 4-way stretch.

It has been our aim to produce our apparel in the UK since our incorporation in 2017. We are very pleased to have teamed up with Lusso in Manchester to manufacture this product with us. We have brought our design and technical knowledge and paired it with Lusso's legendary manufacturing expertise and attention to detail. Together we have produced what we think is the very best apparel currently available.

need more riding- interesting jacket, not sure I am getting best out of it yet

Ive only properly been out in this over this weekend. what i love about the jacket is the fit- you dont feel like you are being slowed down by flapping materials. The closures fit great too- especially the arm/glove junction. Better than any castelli jacket. and the pockets are fine- where you expect them to be. And the orange colour is brilliant- literally!

My only unresolved question is thermal (hence one less star)- i felt quite cold around my shoulders until I warmed up and even then the feeling didnt entirely go away. But i was riding recovery/endurance, i would want this jacket for tempo/group riding. That said, as the temperature dropped i felt warmer in it (not sure how that works). I was riding with the basez extreme baselayer. Might be trapping too much moisture around my shoulders. I need to experiment more with baselayers.

I would also imagine this would be absolutely fine in the wet- something you cannot say about teh £400 Castelli ultimate- which is a lovely jacket, but it stops beading after 30mins or so in the rain i find, even after restoring the finish.

so yeah- few more miles and perhaps some experimentation with base layers should see this to a 5 stars

Great Quality, Nice Features, Not so Stretchy

Not quite the right fit for me, materials are a little unforgiving so had to return unfortunately. Otherwise would have given 5 Stars.

Last piece in my Spatzwear jigsaw filled

A little over a year ago my relationship with Spatwear commenced. Picked up a base layer in a Black Friday offer and my journey started. Next came deep winter base layer , over shoes x 2 choices , socks , arm & leg warmers , balaclava, cap and gloves x 2 choices. Then on to Spatz Heater autumn jersey and a “ few “ shorts !
Last 2 pieces were the Winter Biblongs and now have the Jacket which is the last piece but by far the most important. Cold affects me and I now have so many options tweaking the layers but at all times have the perfect garment to protect me. Will cycle 200K a a week all year round so know what’s needed for each season. In my 60’s so the right gear is as important if not more to me than younger people. The comfort I now have is while I can’t control the weather I have the peace of mind that have cycling gear to match the elements as best as possible.
5’11 ….. 85KG and need the XXL size

Special thanks to James who has been at end of emails throughout to answer all queries about what would suit me best to meet my cycling needs. A lot of money spent but worth every penny. Spatwear doesn’t come cheap but divide the extra cost over the time you will use it and it’s a no brainer not to go the bit extra.
